Finding The Story in Science

Exploring the complexities of science can sometimes feel intimidating to those of us who don’t possess a background in it. There are buzzwords, acronyms, and enough formulas to make your head spin. WORD Vancouver and Christianne’s Lyceum are teaming up once more for an evening with three authors who seriously know their science.

Writing with Emotion, Purpose, and Hope

Art is like therapy. Emotional clarity drives both. For decades, Wayne Ng has enjoyed working as a social worker in schools with young adults and emerging writers. He has run writing groups and delivered discussions on using art as a career pathway while inspiring others to create, to heal, and to find oneself. Writing is a great vehicle to accomplish this as the strongest craft has elements of self-discovery. This workshop for emerging and young adult writers offers introductory level, hands-on writing prompts taken from epistolary and young adult works. These workshops encourage participants to draw from their gut, using self-awareness and emotion in writing scenes and developing characters.

Twisted Poets

This event brings together two writers who work daily toward improving the plight of communities and ecosystems. Ian Thomas works for the Ancient Forest Alliance to protect BC’s endangered old-growth forests. His lifelong passion for the ecosystems and wildlife of the coastal rainforest informs Green Islands, his first book. Adrienne Fitzpatrick reminds us “how water can swallow a person, a village whole, wipe out a generation” in Instructions for a Flood. She explores where she grew up — the beautiful and sometimes dangerous places of central and northwestern BC, uncovering how extractive industries and the powerful force of water have impacted the lives and Indigenous cultures of the area.
